This project involved the transformation of a Chicago office high-rise lobby and mezzanine into a chic bar, lounge, and gaming area, designed to serve as a dynamic space for the building’s tenants.
The project presented several challenges, most notably a very tight schedule and a small, congested workspace. Every trade was working in the lobby simultaneously, making it crucial to manage time and space effectively. To ensure timely completion, especially for the intricate wood installation, the team adjusted the work schedule, opting for night and weekend shifts to navigate the constraints of the site.
The success of this project hinged on meticulous coordination across all trades. Teamwork, clear communication, and a collective effort were essential in overcoming challenges and delivering a high-quality, on-time result. The project not only enhanced the building’s aesthetics but also supported the ongoing revitalization of the surrounding downtown area.
Nancy Thiel, founder and principal of Thiel Architecture + Design, is a licensed architect and an interior designer. With 40+ years’ experience working with luminaries in the architecture world, including Michael Graves, Robert A.M. Stern, and Rockwell Group, where she served as a studio leader, Thiel’s extensive portfolio includes single-family homes and multi-story residences, hotels, restaurants, retail, fitness clubs, offices, theaters, schools and shopping centers. She is a member of the AIA, holds NCARB certification and is a LEED accredited professional. Prior to her career in architecture, Thiel was a dancer and choreographer.
