Alvin High School #4 was a new construction project located in Brazoria County, TX. This massive high school included a combination of vinyl composition tile, porcelain tile, and broadloom carpet boasting a total of 350,000 sq. ft. of flooring.
The bond money allocated for this massive project created a challenge for all parties involved. After going through several budget exercises with the general contractor, we found out quickly big changes would be needed to help move this project forward.
Instead of reaching out to other manufacturers, we decided to double down with the original specified manufacturers and come up with a solution that could benefit all parties involved. After several pre-construction estimating meetings, we were able to work with Daltile, Schluter, and Tarkett and provide a $150,000 value engineering solution that was eventually enough to move the project forward. These colossal changes included, but are not limited to; different metal transition finishes, smaller porcelain wall panels, rubber base alternatives, and much more.
We are grateful to have helped maximize the overall project budget and do it in a way that provided security to all the original specified manufacturers.

With 40+ years’ experience working with luminaries in the architecture world, including Michael Graves, Robert A.M. Stern, and Rockwell Group, where she served as a studio leader, Thiel’s extensive portfolio includes single-family homes and multi-story residences, hotels, restaurants, retail, fitness clubs, offices, theaters, schools and shopping centers. She is a member of the AIA, holds NCARB certification and is a LEED accredited professional. Prior to her career in architecture, Thiel was a dancer and choreographer.
