The Novant Health St. Jude Affiliate Clinic is a project that exemplifies artistic innovation, technical expertise, and imaginative problem-solving. This children’s hospital provides life-saving treatment, and our team collaborated closely with the general contractor, architect, and FUSE Alliance partners Gerflor, Johnsonite, and Uzin to craft a visually inspiring and functionally superior space that supports healing and comfort.
We collaborated on the design changes with all parties, ensuring the intricate circle and leaf patterns in the Gerflor sheet vinyl flooring were not only visually striking but also feasible to implement. This mid-project design change presented both an artistic challenge and a logistical hurdle, requiring careful craftsmanship and creative problem-solving. Working with Gerflor, we expedited material procurement despite long lead times and leveraged custom water jet cutting to transform the flooring into a canvas of organic shapes. Our skilled installers meticulously mapped out the layout of pre-cut materials, ensuring each piece fit flawlessly within the original design concept. To further enhance the aesthetic detail, each leaf vein was hand-scribed and then heat welded back, producing a striking, natural motif that imbues the space with vibrancy and movement.
In addition to the intricate flooring patterns, our team had to overcome a challenging substrate before installation. By partnering with Uzin, we utilized their 886 Premium Skim Patch to create a smooth, stable foundation that would uphold the integrity of the final design. The flooring was then complemented with Johnsonite cove base, seamlessly integrating the elements for a polished and cohesive finish.
The completed flooring design serves as both a functional surface and a piece of interactive art. Featuring bright colors, fluid patterns, and playful elements, the flooring transforms the clinic into an uplifting and engaging environment. This project stands as a testament to the power of creativity in flooring design.
