This 40-year-old 9 story building located on the Broadway Corridor in San Antonio Texas and former home of AT&T will expand the footprint of the UIW Broadway Campus by 20 percent, but not without challenges.
On the first level of this structure 4800 sq ft was designed with a depressed slab allowing for an approximately 3-4” mud bed” application for a ceramic finished floor, new flooring finishes specified require the mud bed to be removed. The challenge here was to safely mechanically remove the cementitious material without damaging the existing metal pan below, which already was found to ungulate between columns.
Enter Allegiance Floors with their floor preparation material partners HPS Schönox ready to offer the solution.
Removing only the very loose mortar materials, then thoroughly vacuuming, followed by the following process, one application of Schönox MR18 solidifier, Schönox SHP primer and finished with Schönox XM in two lifts provided the new subfloor, saving demolition dollars , removing the risk of structural damage to the pan where the mortar was placed and most important keeping construction on schedule.
The pictures below show the process start to finish.
