Melrose Elementary – Oberle Gymnasium Placentia, CA Architect – None GC - None Project Size: 5,500 SF Details: K-8 Education Completed: 2022 Category: Best Flooring Solutions For this Fuse Alliance “Spark Awards” category submission for Best Flooring Solutions, Signature Flooring elected to nominate it’s Oberle Gymnasium replacement project for Melrose Elementary and the City of Placentia. Whereas some projects nominated for this category will feature elaborate designs or large General Contractor & Architecture design build teams, the Oberle Gymnasium flooring replacement project was essential for highlighting many crucial Solutions to achieve project funding, finding the best material and executing procurement and installation to meet a new school year start-up. Signature Flooring and Fuse manufacturer, Gerflor, first approached the City of Placentia after receiving notification that the City had an interest in replacement of one of its aging K-8 gymnasium floors. Gerflor Southern California rep, Jon Torres, proposed using TaraFlex Sport M Plus with Dry Tex System. This material is one of the leaders in terms of K-8 educational basketball, volleyball and multipurpose room needs with it’s high performance and versatility. Working within the School and City’s budget, Signature and Gerflor presented the option to fund the project with the use of SourceWell, a program designed to help the City of Placentia’s procurement efforts to save time, money and select the best needs for its replacement project. Once approved, Signature and Gerflor assisted City staff with various designs and layout based upon multisport options and the dimensional layout of the facility. All materials, from the sheet vinyl to accessories to floor preparation products were stocked domestically in large volumes making color choices easy for the school personal. Another attribute with existing conditions and materials are 100% coverage of moisture vapor emissions based upon the DryTex adhesive system. After receiving materials, Signature coordinated and executed the demo of existing rubber flooring and installation of the new cushioned back sheet vinyl. For the take-up, Signature used ride-on demo machines to handle removing over 5,000 square feet in one day. From there, the floor was prepped using Gerflor’s Gerpatch material warrantying up to unlimited vapor emissions to pass through. Once the vinyl was finished, Signature’s installation team expertly welded together all the seams and finished off the install by painting game lines for both youth Basketball and Volleyball courts. The use of Pacific Solutions’ Flooright surface proved instrumental in showing the client various options and colors based upon the shape and size of the courts. The replacement court was finished by the third week of August, just in time for the staff and educators to begin putting the successful new gym install to use.
