Design by Signature Flooring Project Size: 16,000 SF Details: Healthcare renovation Completed: 2019 Category: Toughest site Install Working through a traditional design-bid-build concept for construction undoubtedly can have its challenges. It’s why we’re currently seeing more and more projects, especially in healthcare, be bought out via the design-build method where the client can be assured of quality and cost control measures. But what happens when there is no general contractor or architect involved and we as the flooring contractor wear the hat of design, preparation, installation and execution? While there can be higher profit margins involved, the level of perfection and consistency is definitely ratcheted up a notch. Oh, and we forgot to mention this direct install with the owner will occur in an occupied, fully-functional hospital? And in a critical emergency room department? Sounds like a Fuse Alliance “Toughest Install” nominee. Signature Flooring worked with a close healthcare client, to refresh the existing sheet vinyl flooring in its Emergency Room. By design, this also included handling and specifying material and color concepts, working within a phased, off hours environment where the best-laid plans can change at a moment’s notice. The hospital selected Tarkett’s Optima sheet vinyl in a two-color contrast to be its featured material, completing it with Johnsonite 6” Rubber base in areas which did not require integral self coving. Signature also recommended and installed Mohawk “Grown Up” LVT tile in select spaces. A 19-phase project, Signature’s direct installation team, demo’ed exiting resilient floors and scraped adhesives followed by utilization of Ardex cementious underlayments. Once dried, the team installed the sheet vinyl, and ensured whatever was taken up, was reinstalled that night to coordinate with keeping the agreed upon phased plan up and running. Some nights, the worked required staying an hour or two later to meet this plan. Other times, it was starting other phases at 4 a.m. to accommodate an ever-changing Emergency Room. Once complete in August of 2019, Signature had installed over 1,200 square yards if vinyl, self-coved 3,000 linear feet of it, and finished the remainder with rubber base. The toughest site install category by nature isn’t always the most glamorous of entries, but often times, it’s the trust instilled by the client and the execution by the flooring contractor that provides for a mutually-beneficial relationship for both sides on many more projects down the line.
