United Airlines transformed 13 floors of its Chicago Loop headquarters in a renovation that prioritized sustainability and circular design. The project focused on repurposing space and prioritizing materials with recycled content to further reduce environmental impact. Removing and transporting the existing carpet tiles from the second-tallest building in Chicago presented logistical challenges. However, the collaborative efforts of United Airlines, Shaw Contract, IA Interior Architects, Flooring Resources Corporation, and the general contractor successfully ensured an efficient process. The carpet tiles were carefully removed, stored, and returned to the mill, preventing waste. Together, the team diverted 565,000 square feet of carpet tile from the landfill, reflecting a strong commitment to circularity and environmental responsibility. Flooring Resources meticulously coordinated shipments to meet the schedule. We had nine truckloads of carpet, two and a half truckloads of LVT, and one truckload of wall base, which needed meticulous coordination to make sure we had materials for each phase in our warehouse on time to meet the schedule. FRC’s scope of work had four phases, and we had two and a half weeks to finish each floor. The floors were staggered, so we had three separate crews working at the same time on different floors. It was a massive undertaking, but we did it! Greg Klaus, Divisional Vice President of Shaw, noted, “Flooring Resources has always been a trusted partner to Shaw. Their communication, craftsmanship and attention detail are world class. We are so appreciative of their support and know when FRC is on the job there is a high probability of success. The United Chicago project is a perfect example of a recent high profile project win!” To further support the project’s sustainability goals, IA specified Shaw Contract’s Eco Solution Q 100 + EcoWorx carpet tiles, chosen for their low embodied carbon and carbon-neutral properties, reinforcing the project's dedication to sustainable design. This exceptional project was recognized with the 2024 Planet Positive Award for Innovation in Best Embodied Carbon Reduction, celebrating the power of collaboration in creating a more sustainable future.
